Club President’s Message
Be Positive to be an Effective Rotarian
Do you tend to see the glass as half empty or half full? The answer relates directly to the concept of Positive Attitude towards life, i.e. about looking at things from a positive perspective. When we become aware of our thought patterns, we should consciously shift into a positive mindset by actively replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. In every corner of the globe, Rotary brings the Magic of Hope, Compassion and Change. Rotarians believe in “Service above Self.” We must set clear and attainable goals having proper direction, vision, and purpose to be an effective Rotarian. These foster positive feedbacks which enhance our self-confidence and elevate self-esteem. Gratitude has a profound effect on positivity. Networking with positive people helps maintaining our own well-being. The basic philosophy of Rotary, viz. Giving generates the positive and fulfilling experience of happiness and purpose.
I express my admiration and gratitude to Rotarian Yagyansis Mohapatra, our District Governor for the Rotary Year 2024-25. Rtn. Mohapatra is an epitome of positivity, politeness and proactive thinking who leads with humility and is a true inspiration. It has been a great delight and learning experience for me to lead RCB Eco under his mentorship. Rotary offers us a big platform with unlimited opportunities. It depends upon us, the Rotarians how we utilize these opportunities.

HONK LESS! REDUCE NOISE POLLUTION
Rtn. Dr. Geetika Patnaik
Noise pollution is the high and unsafe level of sound with adverse impacts on the activity of human or animal life. The source of outdoor noise is mainly caused by vehicular traffic, machineries, and community in general. Noise creates physical and psychological stress, reduce productivity, interfere with communication and concentration. It also acts as a catalyst for workplace accidents.
Noise pollution causes physical health issues including hearing loss and cardio-vascular diseases, particularly for people working in noisy conditions for prolonged periods. The stress resulting from continuous noise triggers reactions in the body like secretion of certain hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol. These reactions account for the development of heart diseases. The brain used to monitor signs of danger from sounds even during sleep. As a result, frequent or loud noise can intensify anxiety and stress. Hence, with continued exposure to noise pollution, a person’s sensitivity to stress increases. People living in noisy environment feel irritable, impatient and angry. Chronic stress from noise pollution can cause elevated blood pressure, impaired cognitive functioning and other allied health issues. In general, long-term exposure to high level of noise from road, rail and air transport can cause a variety of health hazards like type-2 diabetes, sleep disturbances and memory impairment.
Besides the negative physical impacts, noise pollution can have a number of adverse effects on mental health including:
· Anxiety and depression Noise pollution can cause or worsen depression. Consequently, the depression may shoot up in the form of anxiety as well.
· Concentration Issues Noise pollution can make it difficult to focus and maintain span of attention.
· Behavioural problems Noise pollution can cause annoyance, irritability and aggressive behaviour.
Realising the multiple negative effects of loud noise on the physical and mental well-being, Awareness campaigns for No Honking are highly needed. The mission of such campaigns is to spread consciousness among drivers on no/ minimum honking practice. Vehicle horns should be used only when it is in motion to warn of imminent danger and to avoid potential accidents. Placing of signs indicating “No Horn Zone” directs drivers to respect the silence Zones and residential areas during night, except in emergencies. Blowing horn of a stationary vehicle in traffic jams or at traffic lights is illegal and attracts penalty. The frequency of honking can be minimised by:
Practicing defensive driving techniques
Maintaining safe distance from other vehicles
Using turn signals effectively and following traffic rules
No honking practice ensures better road safety and facilitates a disciplined driving culture.
Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Eco organised an awareness event on No-Honking on Sunday, the 25th August 2024 at Buddha Mandir, Bhubaneswar. The target audience was members of Odisha Driver Mahasangha. Shri Bibhu Prasad Hota, an eminent audiologist was invited to address on the negative impacts of loud noise on auditory system and more specifically on hearing impairment. Rotarian Dr. Geetika Patnaik, a senior Psychologist highlighted the detrimental effects of noise pollution on over all well-being of the individual. The members of Driver Mahasangha were made to take an oath that they would only use horn only when it is highly necessary. The participants expressed gratitude for sensitising them on the harmful effects of noise pollution by the audiologist and psychologist.
Let us take the vow to Honk Less and reduce noise pollution.
